Radar monitors use Doppler radar and usually sit several feet behind the ball, so they need more room depth. Photometric monitors use high-speed cameras at impact and sit beside the ball or on the ceiling, which suits shorter rooms. Many newer units combine both.

Example trade-off: Rain or Shine notes the Garmin R10 calculates spin from club data rather than measuring it directly.

Which suits a home sim?

Short room: look at side-of-ball or overhead camera units. Long garage or range use too: radar units work indoors and out. Shared righty/lefty bay: overhead units avoid moving the monitor between players.
